Best Answer For some good shopping, you'll want to walk along Newbery Street. It has some upscale shops and interesting cafes. A few other shopping places would be at Fanueil Hall/Quincy Market and the shops at the Prudential Center. Both of the last two I mentioned are easily accessible by public transportation.

To the OP, though not exactly hole-in-the-wall, a walk down Newbury Street would give you plenty of shopping. However, it's not cheap. Boylston street (one block away) has plenty of shopping as well, and it's not quite as expensive. For more stores that aren't chains, I'd recommend maybe Cambridge (just across the Charles River). I can't think of the names of stores off the top of my head, but one option is to stop in a hotel and ask a concierge. They wouldn't know you're not a guest, and they definitely are in the know on what's good in the city. Giving advice on what to do in Boston is what they're paid to do! 2007-04-15 16:33:37

Answer 4 Newbury Street, Faneuil Hall and the Prudential Center (named the "Pru" to locals) are high-end, shopping mall kind of stores.
If you REALLY want boutique, hole-in-the-wall places, I would take a stroll down the Beacon Hill section of Charles Street in downtown. Charles Street is easy to find because it seperates the Boston Common from the Boston Public Garden. If you head down Charles Street, go towards Beacon Hill (it's near the big gold dome of the State House.) They'll be a Starbucks on the corner, but don't let it fool you. The street it's on has boutiques, cafes and cute little pizza joints.
The newest boutique area of Boston however, is in the South End. I would go to the Boston Center for the Arts at 527 Tremont Street and walk around that general area.
Also, while your in Boston, you can take advantage of the stellar music and night life. The Common Rag has a calendar of events for the month that are $10 and under! It's a great way to find something fun and cheap to do after shopping :-) 2007-04-16 10:41:53
